HS Learning Guide
HS is the global language of goods classification. Learn the 6-digit core and how countries extend it.
1. What is HS?
Managed by the World Customs Organization, HS assigns a 6-digit code to products in international trade. National tariffs build on this core.
2. HS-6 structure
- 2 digits — Chapter (2)
- 4 digits — Heading (4)
- 6 digits — HS-6 subheading (6)
Example: 6109.10 — knitted T-shirts of cotton. The same HS-6 is used worldwide; only digits after the sixth change.
3. National extensions
Countries add digits for statistics and duty lines:
- TR GTİP-12 — Turkey-only national extension of HS-6 (12 digits)
- US HTS-10 — Harmonized Tariff Schedule (official file)
- GB UKGT-10 — UK Trade Tariff (official snapshot)
- EU CN-8 — Combined Nomenclature (official snapshot)
- EU TARIC-10 — CN-8 + 00 baseline (measures separate)
- BR NCM-8 — Siscomex NCM (official API)
- AU / CA / NZ / JP / SG — HS-6 rooted coverage until full official bulk is wired
On E5, search by HS-6 (or product name), then use the World strip to jump into each country code.
4. How to find a code
- Describe the product clearly (material, form, use).
- Search HS or run the classification wizard.
- Open the HS-6 detail and compare national equivalents.
- Verify with a licensed customs broker before declaration.
5. FAQ
Are duty rates on this site binding?
No. Informational only — confirm with official sources.
Why is my country missing?
Schemas are added as open datasets arrive. HS-6 always works globally.
